Whitehorse, (Yukon) –October 13, 2010– The manufacturing of trusses – the frames used to support the roof of a building, will be modernized, thanks to an investment by the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency. Upgrades to the Kilrich Truss Plant will support efficient production of trusses, meet local demand, and increase design capabilities, which will encourage increased business and job opportunities for Yukoners.
The Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State for Democratic Reform, on behalf of the Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), today announced an investment of $213,000 to Kilrich Industries for upgrades to their truss plant.
"Our Government is proud to invest in upgrades to the Kilrich Truss Plant," said Minister Fletcher. "Keeping up with modern advancements in the construction industry is vital to ensure local businesses are able to remain competitive in a growing market."
Chief Mike Smith of the Kwanlin Dun First Nation, one of the major shareholders in Kilrich stated "the Owners of Kilrich recognized the need for automating the production of trusses in the Yukon. With the assistance of the CanNor contribution Kilrich will be able to improve its level of service with enhanced design capabilities and more timely provision of trusses. Fully automating our Truss Plant ensures we can maintain and eventually increase our market share resulting in increased employment opportunities."
"Construction in the North continues to grow and Northern businesses need to be ready to meet the demand," said Minister Duncan, who is also Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor of Métis and Non-Status Indians. "By investing in advancements in this sector, our government is helping to create a diverse and resilient Northern economy."
Investments in these projects were made possible through CanNor’s Aboriginal Economic Development (AED) programming which includes the Aboriginal Business Development Program (ABDP).
AED is one of several economic development programs delivered by CanNor in the territories. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada’s economic development activities across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
