Makerspace YK building working space through S.T.E.A.M

Makerspace YK is starting a three-year project to build a S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) focused community space. This new space will support Yellowknife’s small businesses, entrepreneurs, and hobbyists by providing an affordable commercial working space that offers the use of tools, equipment, and infrastructure on a membership basis. It will also be used as a learning centre and community gathering place.

With the support of CanNor funding, Makerspace YK is able to purchase specialized tools and equipment as well as make the necessary renovations to the facility, including design, and mechanical and electrical upgrades.

The S.T.E.A.M. community space will be a multi-use facility offering office, teaching, and workshop space to meet the various needs of Makerspace members.

This project builds on Makerspace YK’s previous tool lending library initiative by establishing a permanent facility to support skills development in Yellowknife.

Through this project, Makerspace YK hopes to drive sustainable economic diversification and community self-reliance through sharing, collaboration, and empowering northerners.

Makerspace YK received an Arctic Inspiration Prize (AIP), in the youth category, for their Artspace project during the 9th annual AIP Awards Ceremony in February 2021.
